AUTONOMA designs, supplies and commissions laboratory automation for the resources sector. Our work reaches across international supply chains, from precision manufacturing in Europe to remote operations in the Pilbara, and into laboratories that operate around the clock. We take responsibility for the conditions under which that work is done, for its effect on the environment, and for the conduct of the businesses we buy from.

This page sets out our public commitments on human rights and modern slavery, on climate and emissions, on how anyone can raise a concern with us, and on what we expect of our suppliers. It is approved by the Directors of Autonoma Technology Pty Ltd and reviewed annually.

Human rights and Modern Slavery

Our commitment

AUTONOMA respects the human rights of every person affected by our business, including our own employees, the workers of our suppliers and subcontractors, and the communities that host the sites we work on. We have zero tolerance for modern slavery in any form, including forced labour, human trafficking, child labour, debt bondage and deceptive recruiting.

The standards we align to

AUTONOMA publicly commits to conduct our business in alignment with:

the International Bill of Human Rights, comprising the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
the International Labour Organization Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, covering freedom of association and collective bargaining, the elimination of forced and compulsory labour, the abolition of child labour, the elimination of discrimination in employment, and a safe and healthy working environment
the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, including the corporate responsibility to respect human rights, to conduct human rights due diligence, and to provide access to remedy
the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct

We comply with the Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) and require our suppliers and contractors to comply with it and, where they operate offshore, with the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 and equivalent legislation in their jurisdictions. AUTONOMA is not a reporting entity under the Australian Modern Slavery Act, as our revenue is below the reporting threshold. We publish this statement voluntarily.

Ethical recruitment

AUTONOMA recruits directly and ethically. We commit to:

no worker-paid recruitment fees, at any point in our supply chain
no retention of identity documents, and no restriction on a worker’s freedom of movement
written terms of employment in a language the worker understands, provided before work begins
wages and conditions that meet or exceed the applicable award or legal minimum
no deposits, bonds or wage deductions as a condition of employment
the same standards applied to labour hire and subcontracted personnel as to our own employees

How we identify and act on risk

Where our risk sits. We have assessed our operations and supply chain and consider our principal exposure to be in the manufacture of imported equipment and components, and in the extended supply chains of the electrical and mechanical components we purchase. Our direct workforce is small, Australian based, award covered and directly employed, which we assess as low risk.

Due diligence. AUTONOMA’s procurement function conducts due diligence on suppliers and contractors before engagement and periodically thereafter. Our principal equipment manufacturing partner is based in Germany, a jurisdiction with comprehensive labour protections and its own statutory supply chain due diligence obligations. Our Australian subcontractors are locally owned and operated businesses subject to Australian workplace law.

Contractual flow-down. Our purchase orders and subcontracts require compliance with applicable human rights and modern slavery law and with the standards set out on this page.

If we find a problem. Where we identify an actual or potential adverse human rights impact, we act to cease, prevent or mitigate it. Our approach is to engage with the supplier to remediate rather than to disengage immediately, because withdrawal can leave affected workers worse off. We will disengage where a supplier is unwilling to remediate. Where AUTONOMA has caused or contributed to harm, we will contribute to remedy.

Continuous improvement. We review this statement and the underlying policy annually, and we welcome scrutiny from our clients and their supply chain teams.

Climate and emissions

Our commitment

AUTONOMA supports the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees. We commit to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of our own operations consistent with that goal, and to helping our clients reduce theirs.

We are a small Western Australian engineering business and we are not going to overstate what we can do. What follows is what we will measure and deliver, and we will report against it publicly.

Our targets

Short term, to the end of FY27

Establish a greenhouse gas inventory for our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, prepared in accordance with the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, covering our Osborne Park premises and our vehicle fleet
Publish that baseline on this page
Begin measuring the Scope 3 emissions we can most directly influence, being inbound freight of equipment and business air travel

Medium term, to the end of FY30

Reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 40% against the FY27 baseline
Source 100% renewable electricity for our premises
Transition our light vehicle fleet to hybrid or electric as each lease rolls over
Reduce air freight as a proportion of inbound equipment freight by consolidating shipments and planning to sea freight lead times

Long term, by FY35

Net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
All new equipment designs assessed for whole-of-life energy consumption at the Basis of Design stage, with the assessment provided to the client

How we reduce emissions in the work we do

Most of the emissions our business influences are not our own. They sit in the energy our equipment consumes over its operating life, in the freight that brings it to site, and in the travel required to install and support it. That is where we focus.

Designing for lower energy consumption. We specify high efficiency motors and drives, and size pneumatic conveying and dust extraction systems to calculated duty rather than oversizing for margin. Over a ten year design life this is the single largest lever available to us.
Reducing avoidable freight emissions. We consolidate equipment shipments and plan programmes to sea freight lead times so that air freight is reserved for genuine recovery situations and critical spares.
Reducing avoidable travel. We develop and functionally test control system software offline before deployment, and we operate remote support capability for automated laboratories across the Pilbara. Every issue resolved remotely is a flight not taken.
Extending asset life. Refurbishment, obsolescence management and local spares holdings keep existing equipment in service longer, which avoids the embodied emissions of premature replacement.
Local manufacture where it makes sense. Our control panels are built in Perth rather than imported, which removes a sea freight leg entirely.

Reporting

We will publish our emissions inventory and progress against these targets on this page annually from FY27.

Anyone can raise a concern with us

If you have a concern about AUTONOMA, about anyone working for us, or about any business in our supply chain, we want to hear it. This channel is open to:

our employees, contractors and labour hire personnel
the employees and workers of our suppliers and subcontractors
our clients and their personnel
members of the community affected by work we are involved in

You do not need to be certain. A reasonable suspicion is enough.

You can report anonymously. If you give us your contact details we will keep your identity confidential unless you tell us otherwise or we are legally required to disclose it.

What we will do

We will acknowledge your report within five business days where you have given us contact details.
A Director not involved in the matter will assess it and decide how it will be investigated.
We will investigate fairly, and we will keep you informed of progress and outcome so far as we are lawfully able.
We will act on what we find, including remediation, disciplinary action or ending a supplier relationship.

No retaliation

AUTONOMA will not tolerate any detriment to a person because they have raised a concern in good faith. That protection extends to workers of our suppliers and subcontractors. Retaliation is itself a reportable breach of our Code of Conduct.

You can contact the Australian Federal Police on 131 237 or the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94. If you are a worker in an offshore supply chain, you may also raise concerns through the grievance mechanism of your own employer or of the relevant national authority.

Sustainable procurement and supplier expectations

What we expect of the businesses we buy from

AUTONOMA’s supply chain is deliberately small and long standing. We work with a limited number of manufacturers and specialist subcontractors, and we know them well. We expect the same standards of them that our clients expect of us.

Every supplier, subcontractor and labour hire provider engaged by AUTONOMA is required to:

Human rights and labour

comply with all applicable human rights and modern slavery law, including the Australian Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth)
ensure all work is freely chosen, with no forced, bonded, indentured or child labour anywhere in their operations or supply chain
recruit ethically, with no worker-paid fees, no retention of identity documents and no restriction on freedom of movement
pay at or above the applicable legal minimum or award, on time and in full
respect freedom of association and collective bargaining
provide a workplace free from discrimination, bullying and harassment

Health, safety and environment

operate a documented health and safety management system appropriate to their scope
hold and maintain the licences, permits and competencies their work requires
comply with applicable environmental law, and minimise waste, emissions and packaging
report incidents affecting AUTONOMA’s work promptly

Integrity

comply with anti-bribery, anti-corruption, competition, sanctions and trade control law
declare any conflict of interest
protect confidential information and personal data

Transparency

provide reasonable information on request so AUTONOMA can meet its own and its clients’ due diligence and traceability obligations, including places of manufacture, testing and inspection
allow AUTONOMA, and where required its clients, to verify compliance
flow these expectations down to their own suppliers and subcontractors

Local and Indigenous participation

Where capability and value are comparable, AUTONOMA preferences Western Australian businesses, and we actively seek opportunities to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander owned businesses in our supply chain. We regard this as a commercial strength as well as a social one: local suppliers shorten our supply chains, reduce freight emissions and respond faster.
