The Vezin Sampler (VS) is designed to extract increments from a vertically falling stream of material, capturing a complete cross-section of the free-falling bulk material with each extraction. This cross-sectional collection method is widely recognized as one of the most reliable ways to obtain a representative sample, as it accounts for variation across the entire width of the material stream rather than relying on a single fixed collection point. By intersecting the full flow of material as it falls, the VS minimizes the risk of sampling bias caused by particle segregation, uneven distribution, or inconsistent flow patterns within the stream.
This approach makes the VS particularly effective in applications where material composition, particle size, or moisture content can vary across the cross-section of the falling stream, since a partial or point-source sample would risk misrepresenting the true characteristics of the bulk material. The result is a sampling method that consistently produces increments closely reflecting the actual composition of the material being processed, supporting more accurate quality control, process monitoring, and laboratory analysis.
The VS is available in two configurations to suit different sampling requirements and production demands. The standard variant, the Vezin Sampler Single (VS-S), features one cutter that extracts a single representative increment per rotation, making it well suited for applications where a steady, moderate sampling frequency is sufficient to meet quality control needs. For operations requiring a higher sampling rate or greater confidence in sample representativeness, the Vezin Sampler Dual (VS-D) features two opposing cutters, enabling the extraction of two representative increments per rotation. This dual-cutter configuration effectively doubles the sampling frequency compared to the standard variant, without requiring additional equipment, added floor space, or a separate drive system, making it a practical option for higher-throughput or more demanding sampling environments.

The VS is fully enclosed within a funnel-shaped housing that supports a gear motor driving a cutter, which rotates around a vertical axis. The cutter head is radially delineated, with its dimensions and working velocity individually optimized to suit the specific material being sampled, ensuring consistent performance across a wide range of bulk materials. A hatch on top of the VS provides easy access for cleaning, maintenance, inspection, and exchange of cutter heads, helping to minimize downtime during routine servicing and reducing the effort required to keep the system operating at peak reliability.
When triggered, the VS extracts a representative increment with each rotation, guiding it directly into the sample outlet chute, which is oriented parallel to the main process discharge port, before it continues on to the next stage of the sampling process. Reject material passes directly through the VS without disrupting the main material flow, allowing normal process operation to continue uninterrupted between sampling events.
After each completed rotation, the cutter returns to a safe parked position well away from the material stream, preventing the influx of extraneous material and avoiding cross-contamination between samples. This parking behavior is a key part of maintaining sample integrity, particularly in continuous process environments where consecutive increments must remain isolated from one another. Acceleration and deceleration from the parking position occur entirely outside the cutting zone, ensuring the cutter maintains a constant operational speed throughout each cycle and delivers consistent, repeatable extraction performance over time.
The VS control software manages the full extraction cycle, governing the timing and rotation of the cutter to ensure each increment is collected accurately and consistently. Extraction can be triggered according to a configured sampling frequency, by material throughput, or in response to signals from upstream process equipment, allowing the sampling schedule to align closely with actual production conditions.
The software controls the cutter’s acceleration, deceleration, and parking sequence, ensuring the cutter maintains a constant operational speed through the cutting zone while returning safely to its parked position after each rotation. This precise control helps prevent cross-contamination between samples and protects the mechanical integrity of the cutter head over repeated cycles.
Operators can monitor cutter rotation counts, extraction status, and system alerts through the control interface, providing clear visibility into ongoing sampling activity. Sampling parameters, including rotation frequency and trigger conditions, can be configured to match specific process requirements, allowing the VS to be adapted to different material flow rates and production schedules.
The software also includes fault detection and alerting, flagging issues such as motor faults, obstructed cutter movement, or incomplete rotations so maintenance teams can respond quickly and maintain consistent sample quality.
